Founded in 1934 as a supermarket chain, Meijer attributes the innovative modern Supercenter concept in 1962. About half of the company 200 stores are located in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, with additional locations in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin and Illinois. Meijer has an affiliation with Fred Meyer. His first employees including 14-year-old son, Frederik Meijer, then president of the company. The current co-presidents, brothers Hank and Doug Meijer, Henry grandchildren. After studying trends in the supermarket industry, Meijer was a self-service stores and shopping carts from one of the first stores. He also offered basic items like vinegar at bargain prices.
